Starboard gebruikt Jimmy Lewis
FRAUDULENT MARKETING…..what you think?
This month’s issue of Stand Up Paddle Magazine features an inside cover, two-page spread ad by Starboard. And once again, they are using a Jimmy Lewis board in their ad with Starboard stickers on it. Starboard isn’t a small company. They’ve got their stable of riders, in-house shapers, and a full marketing department. So WHY do they need to use my board in their advertisements, PRETENDING that it’s a Starboard?

Ik heb even de reactie van sterretjesplenk afgewacht, maar omdat die uitblijft:
Wat ik begreep van een contact is de ad niet door Starboard int geplaatst maar door de US importeur die al meermaals is gevraagd deze (en een paar andere ads) niet meer te gebruiken.
Als sterretjesplenk word je dat (deels) terecht int aangerekend, maar heb je er tegelijkertijd zelf geen invloed op aangezien importeurs soms ook zelf ads ontwikkelen i.p.v het standaard aangeleverde spul gebruiken.
Tja dan zit je als merk met de gebakken peren.Tegelijkertijd is er al meermaals contact met JL hierover geweest met excuses, maar meneer Lewis mag dit dingetje ook graag commercieel uitmelken anders hadden wij er ook niks van gehoord.
Wat dat betreft komt zijn eigen policy: niet shapen voor teamriders van andere merken ook als mosterd na de maaltijd. Ook JL loopt al tig jaar mee dus kent de klappen van de shape.
Jammer want los van een brakke site waar de prints wel heel erg kleurplaterig lijken maakt hij volgens mij best leuke boards.

Mwoah, dun aan hoor jeroen. Het maakt mij niet zo heel veel uit allemaal maar als het binnen Starboard(weet niet waarom jij het sterretjesplenk noemt, maargoed) zo gevoelig ligt dan gebeurt het gewoon niet.
Die US importeur is ook geen prutser lijkt me.... Het is gewoon groot zaken doen en het gaat in hun geval over niet lullige bedragen en deals met riders en shapers.
Dat Jimmy dit een beetje uitmelkt is idd een beetje flauw.
Anyway ik vindt het nieuwswaardig en verbazingwekkend gedrag van beide partijen.

Star=ster board= plank/plenk= sterretjesplank.
Het vervelende is dat je als merk maar weinig grip op hebt wat je importeur doet, daarvan ken ik vanuit de windsurfhandel tig voorbeelden en dat zal bij de SUPs niet anders zijn.Maar goed, als jij een Gong reclame maakt met daarin een PSH die is overgespoten kan Gong int daar erg weinig aan veranderen, gebruik je die ad nog twee keer ook niet.
Je kunt het hooguit op je kloten krijgen, maar als de contracten een beetje redelijk in elkaar zitten kun je er pas wat van merken op het moment dat je over verlenging van het importeurschap praat.

Maar ik denk dat jouw Gong psh voorbeeld niet zal gebeuren daar Headquarters PSH en Patrice (Gong France) alles wat advertenties aangaat 100% zullen controleren EN aanleveren voor publicatie om dit soort grappen te voorkomen.
Verder zal Gong geen teamriders hebben die op "andermans spul" suppen. Alles in eigen huis en zeker in staat om zelf "iets " Custom te leveren.
En ik denk en ga ervanuit dat Blane daar hetzelfde over denkt.
Neemt niet weg dat het een slordige zaak is en van zo'n grote speler die eenvoudig voorkomen had kunnen worden.... Of ze hadden echt geen ander bruikbaar fotomateriaal en hebbn het willens en wetens gebruikt.

Ik vind de reactie van Lewis eerlijk gezegt zwaar overtrokken en imo puur een poging tot geldklopperij.
In de windsurferij is het heel normaal om met een custom boards maar vaak genoeg ook zeilen te varen waar de stickers van een andere sponsor opstaan. Iedereen doet het en iedereen weet het ook.
Het is ook een illusie om ervan uit te gaan dat het board in de spectaculaire actie daadwerkelijk het board is waarmee geadverteerd wordt.
De meeste jongens zouden niet eens kunnen varen met de boards van de pro,s en de pro,s met een productieboard die moves voor de fotoshoot kunnen maken.Ik be ervan overtuigd dat dat bij het suppen vaak genoeg er ook niet heel anders eraan toe gaat al is het soms alleen maar om logistieke redenen dat het eigen merk moeilijk iets kan leveren en de shaper om de hoek het volgende week af heeft of je met de huisshaper het niet eens bent over en bepaald idee en dus met een andere shaper een variant wil proberen. Dus ik betwijfel of het niet gebeurt.
Als het de dag daarna perfect is en die foto,s worden opgestuurd naar headquaters moet je maar hopen dat het goed gaat.
Maar goed tot zoiets uitkomt zoals bij Starboard heb je gelijk.
Ik denk dat de enige die je wat kan verwijten Connor is, omdat die na de fotoshoot had moet melden van jongens let op, tiss een custom en geen eigen merk, maar aangezien die dat board gewoon heeft gekocht en er geen herkenbare stickers van een ander merk op staat dat ze zouden kunnen schaden, ach....

I have never posted on a forum. But – after reading the posts on this subject, I felt it was time to give some background and insight to this subject.
My husband Keith Baxter - was really close friends with Jimmy Lewis – since the early 1970’s. Keith helped Jimmy through a very hard and tough time of his life. And, Keith helped save Jimmy’s life.
This obviously created a bond / friendship between Keith and Jimmy (over 40 years). So, when Keith or our two kids Ashley and Connor, needed custom boards – we went to Jimmy.
Jimmy made custom boards – for many pro athletes. Tow-in boards, surfboards, kiteboards, windsurfing boards, and now SUP boards. Jimmy also knew that these riders were sponsored by other companies.
But it was important for Custom Board Shapers like Jimmy, to make boards for Pro Athletes – even if they were sponsored by other companies.
Connor’s first windsurfing board was made by Jimmy – when Connor was 8 years old. Connor was sponsored by Starboard at that time – but not one company in the windsurfing industry made small wave boards for a 35 lb kid. So, we had it made Custom.
Seven years later, Connor wanted a SUP gun – for big surf – Jaws, Sunset. This is before Starboard was making Guns. So – we asked Jimmy to make Connor a custom SUP gun. He was happy to do so – and made it totally white – did not even put a Jimmy Lewis logo on it – so that Connor could put all of his Sponsors logos on it. And – we PAID for this board!
Jimmy – knows that Connor is sponsored by Starboard. And, he knows that photos will be taken of him on that board and used.
In a comment from JL USA posted on Standup Zone’s forum on January 30th – Jimmy admittedly states:
“I had adopted the policy of not making any custom boards for any riders who represented other companies, specifically for the reason that this problem is happening.”
Jimmy Admits he makes custom boards for riders representing other companies –and adopted a NEW policy not to make boards for them anymore – because of “problems”.
So – Jimmy – you made the board for Connor – had us pay for this board – and then adopted this NEW policy – but never let us know about your new policy.
Was this a Set Up?? After a 40 year relationship with our family – you set Connor up. A 15 year old kid! You used my son.
Why?? Oh – to sue Starboard for Money. The American Way. Don’t make it – sue for it. Sell a board to a 15 year old sponsored kid – adopt a new policy – don’t let the 15 yr old or the sponsor know of the new policy – and then sue!!
Jimmy - you destroyed relationships between our families. My daughter Ashley and your son Marlon both 21 years old – birthdays a couple months apart – grew up together. I’ve known you since 1985 – meeting you in Paia in Doug Hunts Surf Shop. And, Keith – you’ve known him since the 70’s.
In the end – what have you accomplished?
One thing for sure – I have Zero respect for You. Setting up a 15 year old kid is pretty low Jimmy!! And, seriously - this is your pay back for my husband helping save your LIFE?
To all the readers – Connor nor Starboard did anything wrong. It has been standard practice in the water sports industries for athletes – pushing the limits – pushing themselves – ahead of the norm – or smaller than most in their sport – to order custom boards for their needs. And, there are custom board shapers that make these boards. And still do.
It is that simple.

Surfrider Foundation is receiving a donation this week in the amount of $25,000. The unexpected donation is part of an out of court settlement between legendary surf shaper Jimmy Lewis and Starboard World Ltd and it's U.S. Distributors. The two companies are competitors in the Stand Up Paddleboard market.
Last month, Maui-based Lewis filed suit in the Seattle Division of Washington Federal Court, alleging that Starboard and its US distributors altered high performance photos of their top rider using a Jimmy Lewis standup paddleboard and repeatedly published these pictures in their catalog and advertisements.
Under the settlement agreement, Starboard has agreed to pay a $25,000 charitable donation to Surfrider Foundation. Starboard has also agreed to refrain from using Jimmy Lewis products in any future Starboard advertisements.
